October 22, 2000 is part of a series of pieces I did in 2000-2001 based on field recordings from different neighborhoods of New York City. Each piece was constructed entirely from the sounds of the city itself: I would wander through a selected area wearing a concealed microphone, continually recording into a crude cassette recorder; these recordings were then chopped up, fed into a sampler, and used as raw material for sound design. October 22, 2000 is composed entirely of sounds recorded in Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan; it is also the neighborhood in which I now, two years later, live.
