One
night in April, 2007, the beautiful city of Melbourne, Australia
was host to a small gathering of sound-lovers and curious passers-by
descending on the venerable Northcote Social Club for a night
of subtle soundscaping by Oz-natives Solo Andata and Seaworthy
and New Yorker Taylor Deupree, who was in Australia for a tour.
After a great meal and despite the ghosts of the BBC hijacking
the audio system, the three artists set out to capture the focused
listeners with beds of abandoned melodies and warm acoustic tangles.
In hopes to capture the memories of the night, and a snapshot
of live audio and all of its imperfections, Deupree recorded the
evening with the intent of producing this cd. Live in Melbourne
pairs labelmates Seaworthy and Deupree with Solo Andata, anewcomer
to 12k, who all share in a similar sonic aesthetic.
Solo Andata performed with laptop and a host of small instruments
and electronics creating dense and careful beds of disjointed,
yet beautiful music. Seaworthy transformed the stunning, sparse
drones of his Map in Hand album
into a live, improvised experience that captured all of the emotion
that’s created by a single musician and his guitar. Deupree
rounded off the night with hi characteristically sparse bed of
tones and digital detritus.
Live in Melbourne is strictly
limited to 500 copies.
Solo Andata: A defining element of the SOLO ANDATA
sound is isolation and = separation. In mid-2005, Paul Fiocco
and kane Ikin literally separated and began working in isolation.
Paul moved to Stockholm, Sweden while kane remained in Perth,
Australia. Using laptops and the internet, they began the process
that would eventually produce their first record Fyris Swan (Hefty).
Solo Andata recalls the essence of the avant-garde and free jazz
with its deep loops and twisted drones while alluding to the classic
non symphonic film scores. At times the songs evoke the loneliness
of their mutual isolation with melodies that, at the same time,
are joyous and even beautiful. In their subtlety, the songs evoke
playfulness in the looseness and delicacy of the grooves. Despite
their origination in the most isolated city on the most isolated
continent Solo Andata are people who know nothing but connectivity.
Seaworthy: Seaworthy, a three piece collective
that revolves around core member Cameron Webb as well as Sam Shinazzi
and Greg Bird, was formed in early 2000 to explore melodic and
experimental approaches to the construction (and unravelling)
of minimalist sound scapes from looped guitar, warm drones, piano,
electronics and field recordings. Webb has a PhD in environmental
science and specialises in field based ecological research where
much of his time is spent in isolated wetland environments. Many
field recordings undertaken in these locations form the basis
for textural drones and rhythms from which guitar loops and percussion
can be blended. Similarly, these environmental experiences form
much of the inspiration for Seaworthy’s compositions.
Taylor Deupree: Taylor Deupree is a sound artist,
photographer, and graphic designer residing in upstate New York.
In 1997 he formed the 12k label, which after 11 years, has become
one of the most respect outlets for new, digital music in the
world. Over the past 14 years Deupree has released many cds on
labels throughout the world and has travelled the globe performing
and photographing.
